History of Chicago’s Gold Coast
Nestled along Lake Michigan and to the north of the Magnificent Mile is Chicago’s iconic Gold Coast neighborhood. In the late 1800’s, the near Gold Coast was known as Astor Street District; named after John Jacob Astor, an American aristocrat. Though Astor did not live in Chicago, his name was used to give the neighborhood a reputation for affluence. The historic neighborhood is lined with vintage mansions built in the 1870s. Today, Chicago’s Gold Coast is still known for its elegance and upscale dining, shopping, and real estate.
